How Unique Is Your Dining Experience Compared to Competitors?

RestaurantsImmersionBy Paulo CalistoPublished Updated

Why it matters

In most European towns, guests can choose from several places that serve good food at fair prices. Good food is the entry ticket, not the reason people choose you. What makes guests come back and tell friends is the feeling and the memory. A Toast survey of US adults (October 2025) found that word of mouth is the top way diners discover new restaurants, at 38%. People find it much easier to recommend what is easy to describe.

Being different also matters for AI search. The Deloitte 2025 Holiday Travel Survey of Americans found that restaurants were the category where AI research most often led to an actual visit, at 55%. When someone asks an AI assistant for “a cozy place with live fado” or “a family restaurant with a garden,” the places with a clear, written identity are the ones that match the question.

How to check where you stand

  • Can every member of your staff describe what makes your restaurant special in one sentence?
  • Do your guests mention the same special thing in their reviews without being asked?
  • Is that special thing visible in your photos, menu and website within a few seconds?
  • If you covered your logo, could a regular guest still tell your menu and website apart from a competitor’s?
  • Have you visited or studied your three closest competitors in the last year?

How to improve step by step

  1. Study your closest competitors. Pick three restaurants that guests could choose instead of you. Look at their menus, photos, reviews and prices, and write down what they all have in common. Your opportunity is in what they do not offer.
  2. Ask guests what they remember. Read your best reviews and talk to regulars. Note the words they repeat, such as a dish, a view, a host or a tradition. These words are often your real difference, even if you never planned it.
  3. Write one clear sentence. Turn what you learned into a simple line, like “Grilled fish from the morning market, served on a terrace over the river.” Avoid empty words like “best,” “authentic” or “unique.” Be specific so a stranger can picture it.
  4. Build one signature moment. Choose one thing that happens at every table and only at your place. It could be a welcome taste, the way a dish is served, or a short story about the recipe. Keep it simple enough that every shift can deliver it.
  5. Make it visible everywhere. Use the same sentence and the same type of photos on your website, Google Business Profile, social media and menu. Consistency helps both people and search tools connect your name with your difference.
  6. Train the team to tell the story. Give staff two or three short facts they can share naturally, such as where the cheese comes from or why the dining room looks the way it does. A story told by a person feels more real than one printed on a menu.
  7. Review it every season. Competitors copy good ideas. Every few months, check if your difference is still clear and still yours, and adjust before it becomes ordinary.

How AI assistants see this

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and similar tools build a picture of your restaurant from your website, your listings and what guests write in reviews. If all these sources describe the same clear difference, the AI can match you to specific requests like “romantic dinner with a sea view” or “traditional Alentejo food near the station.” If your pages only say “great food and friendly service,” you look like everyone else, and the AI has no reason to pick you. Write your difference in plain words, in full sentences, on your own website.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying the most popular restaurant in town and hoping to do it a little better.
  • Changing your concept every few months, so guests and search tools never learn what you stand for.
  • Describing your restaurant with general words that any competitor could also use.

Key takeaways

  • A unique dining experience is one that guests can explain to a friend in one sentence.
  • Your real difference often hides in the words guests already use in reviews.
  • One signature moment, delivered every time, is worth more than many small extras.
  • The same clear message on every channel helps both people and AI tools remember you.

Frequently asked questions

What if my restaurant serves the same type of food as everyone else?

Then your difference must come from somewhere else, like the setting, the service style, the story of the family or one special dish. Many guests choose a restaurant for how it makes them feel, not only for the type of cuisine.

Do I need to spend money on decoration to stand out?

No. A clear identity, a signature moment and a team that tells your story well often matter more than expensive design. Start with what you already have and make it consistent.

How do I know if guests see my restaurant as different?

Read your recent reviews and look for repeated words that describe something only you offer. If reviews only mention “good food” and “nice staff,” your difference is not yet clear to guests.
